His other jewels on the ankles and wrists may be jade or another precious material, and his headdress is a wild tangle of watery vegetation. The necklace of Chahk is quite unique: the collar consists of pendant extruded eyeballs and the pectoral is in the shape of an upside-down water jar marked with the hieroglyph for darkness, with what looks like a small serpent emerging from its mouth. He wears a complex loincloth that shows the typical knotted cotton of his costuming, and the rear panel of the loincloth contorts as if the artist was referencing a fish tail. ![]() The underside of each leg is marked with a scale pattern, evoking a shimmering and wet aquatic creature. The young rain god, named Chahk, poses mid-stride, lifting off his left foot and extending the right leg in front of him, gracefully pointing his toes. It contains one of the finest extant deity portraits from the Classic Maya corpus. This cylindrical drinking cup is the magnum opus of the Maya vase painter known as the Metropolitan Master. ![]()

Now Sybella is on her way to the French court to protect the duchess of Brittany-soon to be queen of France-from further threats. But as Dark Triumph showed, and Courting Darkness continues to elaborate upon, she has an enormous capacity for love and a burning desire for redemption. ![]() Sybella knows all too well that violence lingers, since her past is shadowed with some truly horrible events. The plentiful action, as it turns out, since the end of a war does not mean the end of hostilities. The other two protagonists, Ismae and Annith, also show up, but they have taken on other roles that do not keep them as close to the action. Sybella was my favorite of the three protagonists from the His Fair Assassin trilogy, and I’m thrilled to see her story continue in Courting Darkness. Courting Darkness is an immediate followup to the trilogy, beginning only a few days after the end of Mortal Heart. Please note that this review contains spoilers for the His Fair Assassin trilogy by Robin LaFevers. ![]() ![]() ![]() Where they held sway in mens minds the foundations of society were secure it could never suffer complete ruin.
